What biochar is, in one paragraph.
Biochar is the carbon-rich solid left when biomass is heated with little or no oxygen, a process called pyrolysis. Strip away the oxygen and the biomass cannot burn; instead it converts to a stable, porous skeleton of carbon. That structure is what makes biochar useful, and it is also why the same word covers materials that behave nothing alike. The feedstock, the pyrolysis temperature and the post-processing decide whether a given batch holds water in soil, adsorbs contaminants in water, reinforces a polymer, or locks carbon away for centuries.
Biochar is not charcoal and not activated carbon. Charcoal is made to burn. Activated carbon is processed specifically to maximize surface area for adsorption. Biochar is made for soil, water, filler or carbon-removal duty, and is defined by a spec sheet rather than a single number. A producer who sells “biochar” without naming the application, the feedstock and the test results is asking the buyer to guess.
The material sits at the center of several ECS solution areas: it amends and remediates soil, polishes contaminated water, fills bioplastic and paper composites, and underwrites verified carbon-removal credits. Each of those uses pulls on a different part of the spec sheet, which is why ECS treats biochar as four grades, not one product.

What it is used for
Four grades, four jobs.
Each grade is defined by the tests that matter for its application. Pick the grade, name the spec, and ECS runs it across qualified producers on identical terms.
Grade 1 – Soil
Soil amendment and remediation
The most forgiving grade on surface area and the least forgiving on contaminants, because anything in the char ends up in the soil. Used for regenerative agriculture, vineyard soils, and brownfield reclamation.

Grade 2 – Water
Water-filtration media

Grade 3 – Filler
Packaging and composite filler
The grade that links biochar to the bioplastics story: a biochar-PLA composite can be both certified compostable and carbon-negative when paired with a verified removal credit. Used as a bio-filler in PLA, PHA, PE and paper.

Grade 4 – Carbon
Carbon-credit grade
Where vague claims do the most damage. “Certified” without a named registry methodology and a certificate number is not a credit; it is marketing. Used for verified carbon-removal credits in net-zero portfolios.

Six frameworks govern biochar, and they solve two different problems: production quality, and carbon-removal accounting. A quality certificate is not a carbon credit, and the reverse is also true. Require the framework, the grade and the certificate number, every time.

Quality standard
International Biochar Initiative thresholds for fixed carbon, the H/Corg molar ratio, PAH limits and heavy metals. The production-quality baseline, now referenced through CSI after program consolidation.
EBC
Quality standard
European Biochar Certificate, the most granular quality framework, with end-use grades (agricultural, agricultural-organic, feed) each carrying specific contaminant limits aligned to EU rules.
Puro.earth
Carbon removal
A carbon-removal crediting platform with a published biochar methodology. Certifies how removal is measured, what permanence applies, and how credits are issued and retired on its registry.
Verra VM0044
Carbon removal
A methodology on the Verra registry for quantifying carbon removal from biochar use. A carbon-credit framework, not a quality standard; confirm which registry holds the credit.
CSI C-Sink
Carbon removal + quality
Carbon Standards International runs the EBC quality program and the Artisan and Industrial C-Sink schemes. A carbon-removal credential backed by an EBC-grade quality foundation.
USDA BioPreferred
Biobased content
Certifies biobased content for procurement, particularly US federal, via ASTM D6866. Neither a quality nor a carbon-removal standard; do not let a BioPreferred logo stand in for a carbon credit.
ECS treats certification as something to verify, not to take on faith. We require the framework, the grade and the certificate number, check carbon claims against the public registry record, and flag any producer that lists “certifications” without naming them before you sign.
What drives the price
Why biochar quotes vary 10x for the same tonnage.
Most producers are quote-only, so the public price signal is thin. The spread is not noise; it tracks five real drivers. Understand them and a quote sheet stops being a mystery.

What is biochar?
Biochar is the carbon-rich solid that remains when biomass such as wood, crop residue or green waste is heated with little or no oxygen, a process called pyrolysis. The result is a stable, porous carbon that is used as a soil amendment, a water-filtration media, a polymer filler and a durable carbon-removal credential, depending on how it is made and specified.
Is biochar the same as activated carbon or charcoal?
No. All three are carbon-rich pyrolysis products, but they are made and specified differently. Charcoal is made for fuel. Activated carbon is steam- or chemically activated to maximize surface area for adsorption. Biochar is made for soil, filtration, filler or carbon-removal use and is defined by fixed carbon, the H/Corg ratio, surface area, pH and contaminant limits rather than by a single fuel value.
What specs define biochar quality?
The core specifications are fixed carbon content, the hydrogen-to-organic-carbon (H/Corg) molar ratio that signals stability, BET surface area (ASTM D6556), pore-size distribution, pH, particle size, ash content and contaminant ceilings for PAHs and heavy metals. Which of these matter most depends on the grade: surface area governs filtration, while the H/Corg ratio governs carbon-credit permanence.
Which biochar certifications matter?
For production quality, IBI or EBC, now administered through Carbon Standards International (CSI). For carbon-removal credits, Puro.earth, Verra VM0044 or CSI C-Sink. For a biobased-content procurement claim, USDA BioPreferred (ASTM D6866). A quality certificate is not a carbon credit; require the framework, the grade and the certificate number for any claim.
How much does biochar cost in 2026?
Landed prices range roughly 10x, from the low hundreds to over a thousand dollars per ton, driven by feedstock, carbon content, certification stack, particle size and freight. Because biochar has low bulk density, never compare a per-cubic-yard quote to a per-ton quote without converting both to one landed unit. A spec-controlled RFQ is the only way to get a number you can act on.
