The sourcing process
Most industrial sourcing returns a pile of quotes you cannot line up: one is per ton, one is per cubic yard, one cites a certification it cannot name. ECS runs a single spec-controlled RFQ so every producer answers the same questions, and we return a normalized side-by-side instead.
Why this exists
Quote-only sourcing hides the comparison.
When you source a bio-based material directly, each producer scopes the quote to their own strengths. The grades are not the same. The test methods are not the same. The certifications are named in one quote and waved at in the next. By the time the bids arrive, you are not comparing prices, you are comparing sales pitches.
ECS sits between you and the producers as a vendor-neutral routing desk. We do not make or hold inventory, and we are not paid to favor one producer over another. Our job is to hold the specification constant so the only thing that varies across bids is what should: price, lead time, and the quality of the documentation.
- Vendor-neutral. We route to the producer that fits your spec, not the one with the best margin for us.
- Spec-controlled. One specification, issued identically to every producer in the round.
- Evidence-led. Claims resolve to a standard and a certificate number, or they do not enter your shortlist.
- Comparable by design. Bids are normalized to a single landed price per ton before they reach you.
The process
Five steps from application to a side-by-side.
Each step is something we own so you do not have to. You bring the application; we bring the specification discipline, the producer network, and the registry checks.
Submit your spec
Tell us your application, target volume, and the certifications that gate the buy. Partial specs are fine. The intake adapts to your material, and a procurement officer who only knows the problem can still start a useful RFQ.
- Material category and application
- Target annual volume and delivery geography
- Required certifications and contaminant ceilings
We build a controlled specification
Our sourcing desk turns your application into one normalized specification: named grades, named test methods, named certifications, and acceptance criteria tuned to your industry. This is the artifact every producer will answer against.
- Application translated into measurable acceptance criteria
- Test methods named so results are comparable
- Certification and documentation requirements fixed
We run one RFQ across qualified producers
The same specification goes out to qualified producers in our network. Because the spec is identical, grade and certification stay constant across the round. Producers compete on price, lead time, and documentation, not on how favorably they can scope the quote.
- Identical specification issued to every producer
- Producers pre-screened for category fit
- Bundled RFQs supported for multi-material buys
We verify certifications and normalize bids
Every certification claim is checked against the public registry that backs it. Per-batch lab reports are written into the RFQ, not promised verbally. We normalize bids to a single landed price per ton so a per-yard quote and a per-ton quote finally line up.
- Certifications checked against public registries
- Per-batch lab reports required in writing
- Bids normalized to a single landed price per ton
You get a comparable side-by-side
You receive a normalized comparison: price, lead time, certifications with numbers, lab data, and a confirmed end-of-life or disposal pathway. The decision is yours; the homework is done. Comparable bids typically return in two to four weeks.
- Normalized side-by-side across all bids
- End-of-life and disposal pathway confirmed
- Typical turnaround of two to four weeks
What you get
A decision you can defend in a procurement review.
The output is built to survive an audit. Every figure traces to a method, every certification to a registry entry, and every bid to the same specification.
1 spec
issued identically to every producer, so grade and certification stay constant across the entire round.
100%
of certification claims checked against the public registry that backs them before a producer reaches your shortlist.
2 to 4 wks
typical turnaround from a submitted spec to a normalized, comparable side-by-side of bids.
Not at industrial volume yet?
Start retail. Graduate to a quote.
For smaller runs, our retail catalog carries certified-compostable and carbon-negative packaging in stock formats with transparent pricing. Once your quantity passes the retail ceiling, the catalog hands off to the sourcing desk and pre-fills your spec, so the context carries into the industrial RFQ.

Questions buyers ask before the first RFQ.
Does ECS sell the materials directly?
No. ECS is a vendor-neutral sourcing desk, not a producer or distributor. We do not hold inventory and we are not paid to favor one producer. We turn your application into a specification, run it across qualified producers, and return comparable bids. You contract with the producer you choose.
What does it cost to request a quote?
Submitting a spec and receiving a comparable side-by-side carries no obligation to buy. We will confirm the engagement terms with you before any sourcing fee applies, and there is no cost to start the conversation or to receive the initial normalized comparison.
How complete does my specification need to be?
Partial specs are welcome. If you can describe what the material has to do, your target volume, and the certifications that gate the buy, that is enough to start. Our intake walks you through the rest, and we fill the gaps with industry-standard acceptance criteria you can adjust.
How do you verify certifications?
Every certification claim is checked against the public registry that issues it: IBI and EBC for biochar, BPI and TUV Austria and OK Compost for compostability, OMRI and USDA BioPreferred where applicable. Carbon and compostability claims need a methodology and a certificate number, not an adjective.
Can I bundle several materials into one request?
Yes. Multi-material buys are supported through one enterprise sourcing request. We run a coordinated set of RFQs and return the bids in a single normalized comparison, so a buyer sourcing biochar, resin, and filler is not running three separate processes.
Ready when you are
Start your RFQ with whatever you have.
A partial spec, a target volume, or just the problem you are trying to solve. We will turn it into a controlled specification and return bids you can actually compare.
