What PLA actually is.

PLA, or polylactic acid, is a bioplastic polymerized from lactic acid, which is usually fermented from plant sugars such as corn or sugarcane. It is rigid and clear, behaves like a conventional plastic at room temperature, and is certified compostable under industrial conditions. That combination is why PLA is the workhorse of compostable foodservice and packaging: it looks and feels like the plastic it replaces, but it carries a tested end-of-life claim.

The two things buyers most often get wrong about PLA are heat and disposal. PLA softens with heat, so a PLA cold cup is not a hot cup. And PLA is industrially compostable, not home compostable, so the certification has to match the disposal environment your operation or your customers actually have. Both of those are spec decisions, which is why the material question and the certification question travel together.

PLA

Rigid, clear, industrially compostable. Ideal for cold cups, clamshells, and rigid formats where clarity matters. Softens with heat, so it is not for hot liquids without crystallization (CPLA).

PHA

The standards that govern it

Compostability is a certificate, not an adjective.

A credible compostable claim names the standard and the body, and the certification matches the disposal environment. “Biodegradable” alone does not survive a procurement review.

Industrial compostable, US

The North American standard for industrial-compostable plastics. ASTM D6868 covers compostable coatings on paper, which is how a compostable hot cup is certified.

EN 13432

Industrial compostable, EU

The European industrial-compostability standard, underlying the OK Compost INDUSTRIAL mark and the EU recognition of a compostable claim.

BPI and CMA certify products to the compostability standards and are the marks North American commercial composters recognize on the bin.
