When two materials work together
Because ECS spans all four families, we can also combine them. Biochar and biogenic calcium carbonate both act as carbon-storing fillers, so either can support a lower-carbon composite - see carbon-negative filler. Choosing a sustainable material
How do I choose between biochar, chitosan, aragonite, and bioplastics?
Start with your goal. Biochar suits soil, filtration, odor, and carbon storage; chitosan suits plant biostimulation and water coagulation; aragonite calcium carbonate suits bioavailable calcium, pH control, and mineral fillers; compostable bioplastics suit packaging and lower-plastic products. ECS matches the material to the application and ties each recommendation to a named standard.
Can these materials be used together?
Yes. Biochar and biogenic calcium carbonate can both serve as carbon-storing fillers in composites, calcium carbonate can reduce resin in compostable blends, and biochar and chitosan both have water-treatment roles. Because ECS integrates all four families, it can specify combinations rather than a single product.
How do I know a sustainability claim is real?
Look for a named third-party standard behind every claim - OMRI or USDA BioPreferred for organic and bio-based content, NSF/ANSI 60 for drinking-water chemicals, ASTM D6400, EN 13432, BPI, or TUV for compostability, and ISO 14044 or ISO 14067 for carbon claims. A claim with no standard behind it is a greenwashing risk.
