Mechanism
How does biochar control odor?
Odor from livestock, manure, compost, and wastewater is largely carried by two gases: ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, along with a mix of volatile organic compounds. Biochar controls these by adsorption. Produced by pyrolysis - heating biomass to roughly 500-700 C with little oxygen - biochar develops an enormous internal surface area, often several hundred square meters per gram, threaded with fine pores. Odor molecules diffuse into that pore network and are held on the carbon surface instead of escaping into the air.
The same positively and negatively charged sites that make biochar useful in soil also bind odor compounds. Ammonia, which is alkaline, is captured effectively by biochar's surface chemistry, and the material's moisture-buffering ability reduces the wet, anaerobic conditions that generate hydrogen sulfide in the first place. Because biochar is a renewable, biomass-derived solid rather than a synthetic scrubber medium, it also carries the OMRI Listed and USDA BioPreferred credentials that matter to agricultural buyers.

Where is biochar used for odor control?
Barns and bedding
Blended into bedding or manure, biochar adsorbs ammonia, drying litter and cutting barn odor while producing a more valuable manure product.
Compost and biosolids
Added to compost piles and biosolids, biochar reduces odor emissions and buffers moisture, supporting a more aerobic, less smelly process.
Wastewater and lagoons
Used as a cover or filter media, biochar captures hydrogen sulfide and organics at treatment sites and holding lagoons.

How do you apply biochar for odor control?
Application depends on the setting. In barns, biochar is commonly mixed into bedding or top-dressed onto manure at a modest fraction of the litter volume, then refreshed as it saturates. In composting, it is blended into the feedstock at the start of the cycle so it works throughout. As a filter or biofilter media, it is packed into a bed that the odorous air stream passes through. Biochar odor control questions
Does biochar remove ammonia smell?
Yes. Ammonia is one of the compounds biochar captures most effectively, because its porous, chemically active surface adsorbs the alkaline gas. This is why biochar is blended into livestock bedding and manure to cut barn odor.
Is odor-control biochar the same as soil biochar?
It is the same material. The porosity that adsorbs odor gases is the same porosity that holds water and nutrients in soil. In fact, biochar used to capture ammonia becomes a nutrient-loaded soil amendment afterward, so it can be reused on the land.
