Biochar is not one product. The same word covers a coarse soil amendment, a fine water-filtration media, a packaging filler, and a carbon-credit-grade material with a verified durability rating. Each is made differently, costs differently, and is governed by different specifications. A buyer who issues an RFQ for “100 tons of biochar” without naming the use case, the carbon content, and the certification stack will receive bids that cannot be compared, and the lowest bid will almost always be the wrong grade.

The four levers that determine whether your RFQ succeeds:

The five spec dimensions every biochar RFQ must include

A bid is only comparable if every supplier is quoting against the same five numbers. State these explicitly in the RFQ.

1. Feedstock and chain of custody

Forestry residue, crop residue (corn stover, rice husk, wheat straw), and urban green waste produce materially different biochar. Forestry residue yields high fixed carbon and low ash at a premium price. Crop residue is moderate carbon with higher silica. Urban green waste is the cheapest and carries the highest contamination risk. For any carbon-credit application, chain-of-custody documentation is mandatory, not optional.

2. Fixed carbon and H/Corg ratio

Fixed carbon content and the hydrogen-to-organic-carbon (H/Corg) molar ratio are the core quality indicators in the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) and European Biochar Certificate (EBC) standards. A low H/Corg ratio signals a stable, highly carbonized material with a long carbon-permanence horizon. Specify a minimum threshold.

3. Surface area and particle size

For water and air filtration, BET surface area (square meters per gram) and iodine number drive adsorption capacity. For soil, particle size distribution and water-holding capacity matter more. For filler applications, you care about morphology and bulk density. Name the target test method (for example, ASTM D6556 for surface area).

4. Contaminant limits

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), heavy metals, and dioxins must fall under the limits set by your governing certification. Require a third-party lab report for each batch, not a one-time type test.

5. Certification and carbon claim

If you intend to make a carbon-removal or compostable claim downstream, the certification must be named on the spec sheet: IBI Biochar Standards, EBC grade, Puro.earth methodology, Carbon Standards International (CSI) C-Sink, or USDA BioPreferred. A producer that claims “certified” without naming the standard and certificate number is offering a marketing claim, not a procurement-grade credential.

What drives the 10x price spread

Industrial biochar quotes in 2026 range roughly from low-hundreds to over a thousand dollars per ton landed, and the spread is driven by:

  • Feedstock cost and quality (forestry residue commands a premium over green waste).
  • Pyrolysis technology (slow pyrolysis maximizes biochar yield and quality; gasification minimizes it).
  • Carbon content threshold (higher fixed-carbon grades cost more to produce).
  • Certification stack (each certificate adds testing and audit cost).
  • Durability rating (carbon-credit-grade material undergoes additional permanence accounting).
  • Freight distance (biochar is light and bulky; delivery distance can dominate landed cost).

The carbon-credit bundle is the single biggest lever a net-zero buyer can pull: pairing biochar purchase with the associated verified removal credit can lower the net effective cost by a meaningful margin because the credit has independent market value.
