The EU is rewriting the rulebook on both halves of ECS’s catalog, and Germany is the natural gateway. On packaging, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR) entered into force on 11 February 2025 and applies from 12 August 2026, with its dedicated compostable-packaging requirements applying from 12 February 2028. There is an important nuance ECS states up front: EN 13432:2000 may be used as guidance, but it will no longer serve, on its own, as proof of conformity under the PPWR’s new compostable regime. So we match materials to EN 13432 as the current reference while tracking the forward PPWR criteria — we do not sell EN 13432 as a forward-looking conformity guarantee it is not.

On the carbon side, the EU’s Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation moved Biochar Carbon Removal into the permanent-removal category when the Commission adopted its first methodologies on 3 February 2026, built on the QU.A.L.ITY criteria (including a roughly 200-year permanence threshold and a 5-year re-certification cycle). The established voluntary standards — the European Biochar Certificate (EBC) and Puro.earth — remain the practical entry points.
