What is the difference between biochar and activated carbon?
All three materials are made by pyrolysis - heating carbon-rich biomass in a low-oxygen environment. The differences come from what happens next and what the material is made to do. Charcoal is produced to be burned as fuel. Biochar is produced and characterized for soil, filtration, and long-term carbon storage. Activated carbon is biochar or char that has undergone an extra activation step - high-temperature steam or chemical treatment - that dramatically increases its internal surface area and pore volume for demanding adsorption duties.
That activation step is the crux. It is energy- and cost-intensive, which is why activated carbon is far more expensive, but it produces a material with very high surface area used where adsorption performance is critical, such as potable-water polishing and air purification. Biochar has moderate-to-high surface area at a fraction of the cost, which makes it the practical choice for soil and broad environmental applications where you do not need pharmaceutical-grade adsorption.

Which one should you use?
Choose activated carbon when adsorption performance is non-negotiable - drinking-water polishing, air purification, or removing trace contaminants - and specify a grade certified to the relevant ASTM or NSF standard. Choose biochar when you need a renewable, lower-cost material for soil amendment, stormwater and runoff filtration, or odor control, where its moderate-to-high surface area is more than adequate and its OMRI Listed and USDA BioPreferred credentials add value. Choose charcoal only when you actually want a fuel.
